The Maharishi Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi Programs
Awaken the total creative potential of your brain
The human brain, with its hundred billion nerve cells and astronomical number of interconnections among them, is the most complex and sophisticated structure in the known universe — it is truly the crown of creation.
Yet people commonly use only a fraction of the brain’s full potential. The fundamental goal of education should be to culture the total potential of the brain.
Your brain is shaped by every experience you have. The sight of snow falling, the smell of a pine, the sound of a car’s horn — everything you think, see, and do enlivens a specific part of your brain and modifies your brain’s structure and function.
This applies to academic study as well. When you study mathematics you stimulate certain areas of the brain, while studying literature or music enlivens still other areas.
But none of these activities enlivens the total brain. No matter how well-rounded your education might be, you will only enliven specific parts of the brain.
If you desire to develop your creative potential to the fullest, you must enliven the total brain.
How to enliven the total brain
There is only one experience that enlivens the total brain, and that is the experience of total consciousness. This experience comes naturally and spontaneously during the Transcendental Meditation technique, which allows your attention to turn within and the activity of the mind to settle down.
During this simple, natural, and effortless procedure, your mind settles down to a state of restful alertness, of pure wakefulness or pure consciousness. In this state, consciousness is awake to itself, aware of its own silent, unbounded nature. This is the ultimate value of your Self. In Vedic terminology, this unbounded field of pure consciousness is known as Atma.
This experience of pure consciousness enlivens the total brain. It awakens all of the brain’s countless delicate fibers simultaneously and brings them into a state of integrated functioning. Scientific research studies have shown that in this state, brain functioning becomes highly orderly and coherent.
The Transcendental Meditation technique allows you to have this experience on a regular basis — twenty minutes twice each day, day after day.
The many benefits of enlivening the total brain
The benefits are extraordinary, as more than 600 scientific research studies, conducted at more than 200 universities and research institutes, have demonstrated. You become more awake and alert throughout the day. Intelligence and creativity increase. Memory and learning ability improve. Reaction time becomes faster. One’s personality blossoms in a balanced way, and relationships become more natural and fulfilling.
These are just a few of the many practical benefits that come from developing the total brain. But the benefits go far beyond these. As you develop the total potential of your brain,
Yogic Flying, an aspect of the TM-Sidhi® program, is a technique for making full use of the human brain. Based on the ancient Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the TM-Sidhi program was introduced by Maharishi in 1977 as a natural extension of the Transcendental Meditation® program.
Increased brain wave coherence
The Transcendental Meditation technique allows your mind to settle down and experience pure consciousness, unbounded awareness. The TM-Sidhi program trains you to think and act from this most powerful level of the mind. During the practice of Yogic Flying, there is a dramatic increase in brain wave coherence that coincides with the body lifting from the ground in short hops.
Those who practice Yogic Flying describe the inner experience as one of happiness, energy, exhilaration, and freedom. The benefits of this technique carry over into daily life. People find that Yogic Flying brings clearer thinking, greater effectiveness, and more support of nature — that is, more support from the environment in fulfilling one’s desires.
Scientific documented benefits have shown that the TM-Sidhi program, including Yogic Flying, accelerates the personal growth that comes with the Transcendental Meditation technique by itself. This includes the development of creativity, learning ability, positivity, physical health, and psychological well-being.
Most important is what happens in the brain. Research shows that when people practice the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs, including Yogic Flying, their brain wave patterns become increasingly orderly and coherent — even outside of meditation, during their daily activity, indicating that they have access to greater brain potential in everything they do.
Enormous practical value of this improved brain functioning can be likened to an orchestra where every instrument plays its part in perfect rhythm and harmony, enhancing the entire symphony. In the brain of a Yogic Flyer, there is less random, unproductive neural firing. All different aspects of the brain support each other and lend maximum power to each thought and activity.
World peace — the by-product of total brain functioning
Why is the world filled with crime and conflict, terrorism and war? Because people have not developed the total potential of their brain physiology.
But when the brain functions in an orderly way as a result of the Transcendental Meditation technique, it actually radiates peace and orderliness into the environment. Many research studies have shown that when even a small percentage of the population does this, they create harmony in the whole society. This is the spontaneous by-product of developing the brain’s total potential.
Even more advanced are the effects of the TM-Sidhi program. During the past 25 years, many scientific studies have found that group practice of the TM-Sidhi program can significantly reduce crime rates, terrorism, and international conflict. Using sophisticated statistical analysis, scientists have found a clear causal link between the size of a Yogic Flying group and the degree of positive tendencies in society.
These studies have been overseen by expert panels — including, in one study, the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department — and published in such leading journals as Social Indicators Research and The Journal of Conflict Resolution (edited at Yale University). No other method for creating peace has been so rigorously tested and proven so consistently effective.
